Chuck Boyd: A Legacy of Service for the Ragged Mountain Foundation
In the heart of every community, there are individuals who dedicate their time and energy to making a lasting impact. Chuck Boyd is one such individual whose unwavering commitment to the Ragged Mountain Foundation (RMF) has touched countless lives and continues to inspire all who have had the pleasure of working alongside him. His remarkable service and selfless volunteering have played a vital role in preserving the natural beauty and spirit of Ragged Mountain, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
Since the inception of the RMF back in 1989, Chuck Boyd has been an instrumental force in supporting the mission of the RMF, an organization devoted to the conservation of Connecticut climbing. Whether it’s through hands-on conservation projects, organizing community events, or providing invaluable leadership, Chuck has always approached his work with passion, determination, and love for the natural environment.
A Lifelong Commitment to Conservation:
Chuck’s connection to Ragged is not just about the work he’s done; it’s about the deep respect he holds for the land. A seasoned volunteer, Chuck has participated in a wide range of activities aimed at preserving and enhancing the area’s natural beauty. His tireless efforts have included maintaining hiking trails, removing invasive species, and organizing clean-up campaigns, all of which contribute to the health of the ecosystem.
His dedication to preserving the landscape goes beyond the physical work. Chuck has played an important role in educating others about the significance of environmental conservation. Whether through leading educational programs, mentoring younger volunteers, or sharing his knowledge of the area’s history and ecology, Chuck has fostered a deep connection between the community and the land they cherish.
Memories:
Chuck said recently that he has some wonderful memories of being on the RMF Board of Directors. With the biggest smile on his face and a chuckle in his voice, he said that there were simply too many to pick just one favorite. Of the stories that he did name, his many days doing trail work with former president and beloved friend Brien Roscetti. Chuck said that he loved each opportunity to teach others about trail work and protecting high and wild places. He has this great saying that he wanted to pass along,“If you want to do something well, you want to train your replacement”.
A True Leader and Mentor:
Chuck’s leadership within the RMF has been marked by his ability to inspire and motivate those around him. He has always approached his work with humility, leading by example and encouraging others to take part in the cause. His mentorship has been invaluable to countless volunteers, providing them with the knowledge and encouragement they need to make a difference.
Chuck played an instrumental role in several projects over the years. A couple that he took charge of at Ragged were the Boat House Project and the Stanley Hart Damn Project., Chuck worked for decades to get all the permits and permissions to demolish and remove the boat house which was once located on the west side of the Stanley Hart Pond. Many board members came and went during the time it took to eventually remove the boat house from the Ragged property. Chuck’s persistence paid off and after years of work the boat house was removed.
Chuck’s leadership with the boat house led him to be RMF’s point person for all permitted projects on the Ragged property. Chuck took charge of a recent project on the Stanely Hart Dam. After receiving an engineers report that the dam was failing, Chuck stepped in once again to ensure that the necessary steps were taken to replace the drawdown pipe and valve and fix the dam. Chuck reflects and suggests to others that follow “lead with persistence and patience and the job will get done.”
Through Chuck’s time on the board, the RMF has grown stronger and more united. He has been a steady presence, always willing to lend a hand and offer guidance to anyone who needs it. His positive attitude, strong work ethic, and genuine care for both the people and the environment have made him a beloved figure within the foundation and the wider climbing community.
A Lasting Impact:
The true measure of Chuck Boyd’s impact is not just in the tangible results of his efforts, but in the legacy he leaves behind. Thanks to his hard work and dedication, Ragged remains a place of beauty for future generations to enjoy. Chuck’s contributions will continue to shape the foundation’s work for years to come, ensuring that the spirit of conservation and community remains alive and well.
As we honor Chuck Boyd for his years of service to the RMF, we also recognize the broader impact of his work. He has helped create a community where people are inspired to give back, to care for the environment, and to work together toward a common goal. His legacy is one of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to preserving the natural world.
Chuck exemplifies the best of what it means to serve and volunteer. His efforts have not only enriched the RMF but have also strengthened the bonds of the community. It is with great admiration and gratitude that we celebrate Chuck’s years of selfless dedication and the enduring impact of his work.
Thank you, Chuck, for all that you’ve done—and continue to do—for Ragged Mountain and the people who call it home.
