2025 Trail day kick-off
On a cold Sunday morning over 25 volunteers came out to help with erosion control at the south end of the Main Cliff.
The goal was to start building a retaining wall underneath the popular south end climbs from Carey Corner to Green Gutter. A few years ago the dead Hemlock trees were removed as they presented clear and obvious hazards. The RMF’s attempt to save the trees only slowed the process. Now that the dead hemlocks root balls are decaying, the hill side close to the cliff between Carey Corner and Green Gutter have slowly begun to erode. Due to the erosion around the hemlock stumps, the loose dirt and scree have made it harder to access the base of several classic Ragged routes. The ongoing efforts will, hopefully, create a solid belay stance at the base of these climbs, prevent further erosion and save what trees are left in this zone.
On Sunday, the work started with hauling rock from below the cliff and staging them on the trail. A separate crew then basketed and carried them into position. The ground prep crew consisting of some additional volunteers leveled a base for easy unloading. With an eager crew and lots of hands we were able to get a solid foundation to build upon for future trail day visits.
Start of the retaining wall, more to come
Our retention wall project will continue on May 4th, as we add and expand upon the work that was started by our hearty volunteers who came out on Sunday, April 13th. Thanks again to all who lent a hand to get this project underway.
We’d love your help! Please check out our list of upcoming trail days on the volunteer page of the RMF site. Be sure to sign up for any future dates and stay in the know.
Future upcoming projects include work on the approach trail at Cathole, clean-up days at Chatfield Hollow and Bear Rock, and more work on the retention wall at the Main Cliff. If you have other suggestions for future projects please reach out to info@raggedmtn.org with comments.
